I’m really struggling

My son is 6, and has always been a high needs child. He spent his first year crying, and didn’t sleep through until he was 3. He is bright, creative, funny and loving but is so exhausting. He is an only child, and needs me and my husband constantly. He is a highly emotional child, and I cannot seem to have a successful interaction with him without him reacting with anger or tears. I feel I am completely messing him up; I can’t get anything right. Each day starts with a meltdown, and ends with a battle at bedtime. Getting dressed, brushing teeth, sitting for dinner, putting shoes on are all difficult. He is so needy, I thought at 6.5 yrs things would feel easier.
