Looking for discipline suggestions for a 5 year old

Hey everyone 👋 ! My almost five year old is reaching the age where it is clear that time outs are no longer an effective means of discipline. I am looking for suggestions for positive forms of discipline or even creative forms of punishment that work for elementary aged kids. Tonight we resorted to sending him to bed early without any books or songs, but I feel bad taking away books and our bedtime bonding moments. His biggest issue at the moment is poor listening. I feel like a broken record during the day, constantly reminding him to act appropriately. No yelling, no running, no throwing toys. It just seems like he doesn’t listen as well and any form of discipline just goes in one ear and out the other. He will go to time out for a few minutes and then come back and do the same bad behavior that put him there in the first place. When I remind him about the rules he says “I’m sorry, I forgot,” and then two seconds later does it again! I feel like we need some sort of chart or jar or something to get him back on track. We do not believe in physical punishment, so spanking and swatting is definitely out of the question. Any suggestions or links to good websites? I tried reading “How to talk so kids will listen” and honestly it didn’t really do it for me. I found the book to be super confusing and not well organized. Any other good suggestions for active little boys? He’s not a bad kid, but he is a bit of a hurricane at times. Thanks everyone! via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2ZRP7GK
