14 month old breathing

I was wondering if anyone has any advice. When my 14 month old is asleep at night, he sometimes does this really weird thing with his breathing. It's like, he'll hold his breath for 2-3 seconds and then he'll do a gasp and then a noise that sounds like a stifled sob (sorry that's the best way I can describe it) he'll either then repeat it again or wake up crying?It doesn't happen every night, I'd say about twice a week and it's never when he naps during the day it's only at night. It's quite frightening to see and hear, I've had him to the doctors and they say nothing is wrong, the health visitor said he might be dreaming and he very well might be and its me being silly!I have a 14 year old as well and I don't remember her doing this but it's been a long time since she was a baby.
