So, yes, it’s VERY late in the game. My son is nine and just learned how to tie his shoes! The reason for this is because when he was four, my husband (his father) suddenly died. Obviously it was a traumatic time for both of us, and a lot of “normal” childhood milestones fell by the wayside. Every time I took him to pick out shoes, he chose Velcro or stretchy elastic ones. The last time was six months ago. I never pushed it because I didn’t want to dictate his shoe choices, but I am well aware that if he were to show up in middle school with Velcro shoes he would be teased mercilessly. Finally, yesterday, I took him to the store for some new shoes and the only shoes they had in his size were tie shoes. He loved them, so I assured him shoe tying was easy and I’d teach him as soon as we got home. It took some practice, but today he is tying his shoes easy peasy. I’m so glad we’ve finally gotten past this!Next step is riding a bike. Like the shoes, he’s never shown an interest so I’ve never pushed him, but I know in our suburban area when he gets to middle school it will be his main mode of transportation around the neighborhood and he will be left in the dust if he can’t do it.Slowly, five years later, we are finally regaining some traditional “normalcy”! via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2DkuFpw
