Why do people get so shocked when you tell them you won't be hitting your kids?

There have been many times this has happened to me but most recently was this evening from my MIL.She was telling us about when she was watching our nephews and one of them pushed the other and she pulled out a fly swatter and spanked him with it. A fucking fly swatter. Then she went on to tell us about previous times she had spanked them. I gave my husband the look and he spoke up and told her that she would not be permitted to spank our child and I told her we weren't going to use spanking as a punishment. She made a face and was like 'yeah, okay just wait till she's older'.No I will not wait til she is older. I'm not going to hit my kid, point blank, period. Especially for hitting or pushing another kid. What issue does that solve? Punishing a child by hitting them to teach them that hitting is wrong just seems so stupid and counter intuitive.Personally as a kid spanking me never did anything except make me angrier and made my anger issues worse and though I now have excellent relationships with both of my parents it made me hate them as a child.I told my husband that if she ever touches our child in that way she would not be seeing her for a long time.
