Does not having a father while growing up will affect kid ?

I am a female. I have a 1 yr old son and I am in the process of divorce . I want to move 800 miles away from father for a job.My ex is so far a good father and told me that if I move away, it will be a selfish decision and he will loose the attachment with baby. Likely, my son will have a minimal contact with father for next 17 years.I am wondering how that will affect my son while growing up without father around. Any experiences ?
