Explaining Racism to Toddlers

My daughter is three years old and mixed race (African American & Caucasian). I’m a single mom, and my ex has never been present. We live in a diverse area, so it never fails to shock me how people can still have such intolerant views.Today, one of her teachers pulled me to the side and said a classmate called her “black”. She described it as the child was “noticing children getting tan”, but the use of the word black makes me think otherwise. My daughter is extremely verbal for her age, and said that she was the only child that was “called a color”.It’s worth mentioning that this child’s parents were nosy towards my boyfriend and I at a school function. I assume they noticed my daughter calls him by first his name, and they took it upon themselves to subtly figure out if he was her biological father. What would you do in this situation? How do you explain race to children so young? I try to read her books with black main characters, give her dolls of different shades, admire different hair textures...but I’m lost on what to do in such a direct situation. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/3im5cwb
