Why do parents send their kids to boarding schools?

I never really understood this. Seeing as they cost a fortune (often more than $60K+/yr) they would have to be quite wealthy to send their child to one. Why would you want your kid to live/learn/mingle exclusively with other rich kids?Modern society in many ways is more merit based than it was 50 years ago.
