WARNING: Loaned School Computers

Something I have noticed throughout the past months of virtual learning is the widespread issues associated with loaned school computers. Recently a ransom ware attack was executed on Baltimore County, MD schools, causing trouble with their Windows 10 laptops and putting students home WiFi networks at risk. There have also been instances in the past, but also recently of school districts activating the laptop webcams on the computers to monitor whether the computer is in a proper environment. These activations CAN occur without the Webcam light being activated. Not sure about y’all, but that does not sound good to me.My husband and I came up with three procedures to protect you, your student, and your networks from these issues...Opt for a Chromebook over Windows, Chromebook’s are equipped with a web security application pre installed, Windows requires one to be purchased, installed, confirmed, and it’s a timely process that many school districts avoid to save time. On their networks they can take the risk, but putting our networks at risk? Nuh uhGet a webcam cover. They protect your security and they can easily be flipped open when your child has to go on camera for Zoom. They can easily be removed when you have to return the computer with a knife or wedge.Close the computer when it is not in use. This makes it harder for someone attempting to monitor you through the webcam. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2VzI6HB
